I thought the damn things were real in the store. On discovering my error, I figured they'd be that much better for photos, since they wouldn't decay or wilt. Somebody online had a bunch of great photoshop curves for applying B&W 'toning' to make inkjet monochrome look much better. If anybody ever reads this and is interested, I will try to find the site for you.
