century oak 1
« Previous Main Next »

This is one of 3 posts of the Century Oak outside of Charleston SC. It is allegedly the oldest living thing east of the Mississippi, and may be 1100 years old! The trunk is at least 8 feet across and I don't know how far the branches spread---at least 150 feet. The branches hang very low to the ground and actually dip up and down, touching it. They look like sea serpents coming in and out of the ground.
This shot, of course, is the other direction looking up through the branches. I badly overexposed it and couldn't get anything worthwhile at first. Just before giving up I yanked the curves way far one way, more in frustration than anything else, and this magical image appeared. The combination of sky and branches reminds me a bit of Fragonard---the colors and wispy textures at least.
